Great success at the german championships
Brass Band DÜren scored very well at the 2nd german Brass Band Championships and came in 2nd in two different competitions. With their performance of the testpiece "variations on laudate dominum" (by Edward Gregson) and their own choice piece "Lake of the moon" (by Kevin Houben) the Brass Band successfully defended their second place from the year before under the conduct of Martin Schädlich in the second division.
Third came "Brass Band Regensburg" and fourth "Brass Band München", winning the competition was "Cologne Concert Brass".
Second Prize in the entertainment contest
The entertainmant contest, held for the first time this year, provided for a lot of excitement amongst both the audience and the bands. In this contest the entertainment value came to the fore which is why the jury not only consisted of the professional jury but also of 15 listeners from the crowd. Each new team of 15 judging listeners was selected by chance for every band.
The professional jury for all contests during the championship consisted of the top-class musicians Hannes Buchegger, Corsin Tuor and Jan can der Roost.
During their thirty minute performance the Brass Band Düren tried to show the variety of Brass band music including pieces like "Yellow submarine" (arranged by Alan fernie) and "Concertante for Band" (by Stephen Bulla). With the performance of the hymn tune "I'll walk with god" (arranged by Goff Richards) they showed how sacral music can get under ones skin and hot it's also fit to be played during an entertainment contest. As last piece the Brass band played "theme for Miguel" which orginally is a piece from the icelandic funk band Jaguar. This adventurous experiment led to enthusiastic applaus from the audiance.
The Brass Band was only beaten by the "Brass Band A7" from the first division. Third came "3BA", the winners of the first division and thus the german champions (aswell as the winners of the B-section of the European Brass Band Championships in Oostende a few weeks ago). In fourth came "Cologne Concert Brass".
Besides of that our percussionists were awarded the special price for "best percussion".
Visit to Rieden
On their way back from Ingolstadt the Band had a stopover in Rieden. The orchestra of Rieden had accommodated the Brass band terrificly in 2007 when the band took part in the federal music festival in Würzburg.
Because the local orchestra were celebrating their 85th anniversary this year, they quickly found an occasion for a concert. After a very warm welcome the Brass Band enjoyed their gastronomic specialities and later played a concert for the enthusiastic crowd.

On Sunday there will be the possibility for all brass players of the region to experience the worldstar first-hand. In a 3 hour workshop he will give informations about breathing, tone building, advanced playing techniques, expansion of the tone range and the art of performing as a soloist.
The 28 year old David Childs has already played as soloist at the BBC Night of the Proms and was engaged to play as guest soloist for many brass bands and sinfonic orchestras. His special trademark is his almost boundless appearing technical control of his instrument and the emotional expression he gives all the melodies.
